bittorrent freezes the system

I've got the same one in my system at home, and i've never had problems with BT.

Try running:
ethtool -s eth0 duplex full

is BT causing the lockup immediately, or after some period of time?

also, what kind of motherboard are you using?  did you verify that
you're using the latest BIOS?
