So far so good.  But on my system now it reads from /etc/passwd and 
remains happy.  On your system instead it decides to look in here:

> open("/etc/default/nss", O_RDONLY)      = 4

This file is something to do with NIS auth.  Are you set up for NIS auth 
to your knowledge?
