Another option that is simple is to put together a CD of FOSS software 
to give to the teacher/IT/administrators that can be copied and given to 
all the students.  This way all the students and teachers are using the 
same software.  Solves many headaches.

Also you can play the "poorer students" trump card as well as the legal 
issues of students having to "pirate software" to do their homework.

With ODF getting ISO certification, there is an even bigger incentive to 
use OOo.  And OOo also works on Windows, Macs and Linux systems.
