many of us couldn't care less about proprietary drivers and choose
hardware based upon whether and how well the hardware is supported by
open source drivers just to avoid this type of situation.

Open source drivers are of course, the only ones that can actually be
community supported and totally integrated.

Closed source drivers require gymnastics to get them work - OP needs to
get over it.

Granted the options aren't great on laptops...c'est la vie.
