Resizing partitions

    On my /dev/hda I have the following:

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Mount
/dev/hda1   *       1   261  2096451   /
/dev/hda2         262   783  4192965   /var/log
/dev/hda3         784  1256  3799372+     <=== empty
/dev/hda4        1257  1583  2626627+  [extended]
/dev/hda5        1257  1517  2096451   /tmp
/dev/hda6        1518  1583   530113+  [swap]

    My problem is that when I originally set this machine up, I made the
mistake of allocating 2GiB for / and I have now run out of space twice.
So, since I have 3.6GiB available in that empty space (it used to be
another partition that I no longer need or use,) is there some way I can
combine or add that space to / without having to rebuild the machine?
Or am I just SOL?
