I'm not convinced that this is actually a fedora install.

You can replace this by simply (as root)

echo "Fedora Core release 5 (Bordeaux)" > /etc/fedora-release
ln -s /etc/fedora-release /etc/redhat-release

but first, let's confirm that this is fedora core 5 install
