That's a good idea.  Another thing that can be illuminating is mtr (my 
traceroute), it's a lot better than normal traceroute.  Give it a try 
(as root) on, for example, www.smh.com.au

mtr www.shm.com.au

and see if there is a hint where any packetloss is being introduced.
