Soundcard not working under FC5

Hi everyone,
i have an acer travel mate laptop (can't remember what version, and can't 
read the case to remind myself). The sound card isn't working. When I try 
alsamixer I get:
[root sparky ~]# alsamixer

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
[root sparky ~]#

How do I stop this and get sound?

I am blind, so sound (for software speech) is vital!
