This is the main thing.

You might want to turn this on with "smartctl -o on /dev/hda".  It 
may make the disk a bit slower.  It may scrub bad sectors before they 
become uncorrectable.

The drive doesn't think it has failed, as the WHEN_FAILED column is blank.
