It's encoded as e2 94 82
= 11100010 10010100 10000010
Take that out of UTF-8 encoding, and you get
0010 010100 000010
= 9474 (decimal) or 2502 (hex). Those are Unicode code points.
A quick Google suggests that's "BOX DRAWINGS LIGHT VERTICAL".
No, you *don't* type it directly.

... hold down Ctrl and Shift and enter the hexadecimal Unicode
value, preceded by the letter U if using GNOME 2.15 or later.
Note: if your e-mail client is not UTF-8-aware (or there's *very* buggy
software between the list and you) then you won't see that symbol
properly.
