If you just want inexpensive raid 1 for a home system, use software raid.

Hardware raid controllers really don't pay off until you get battery backed
cache.

There are some downsides to hardware controllers. You are locked to that
controller and will have limited options for buying replacements if one fails.
The on controller cpus may be slower than using your general purpose cpu(s).
You may need to use propietary drivers which can block kernel upgrades and
which eventually won't be supported.
