just tried

mplayer -dumpstream rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio4/science/sci9_wed.ra

Something is arriving

./stream.dump

I assume I will be able to play it back using mplayer as I am also
listening to it right now using Firefox, mplayerplug-in and
MediaPlayerConnectivity
