new fc6 install in cups hel^Hck. "connection to cups server failed"

I just installed fc6 on my p3 multi-boot desktop. [first time with fedora
since fc2] I selected kde instead of gnome during the text mode
install.  Which appeared to install cleanly. I was pleasantly surprised
that it started in runlevel 3. startx fires up kde nicely btw.

The next thing I did was to install a few personal MUST-HAVEs (mc, vim,
& pine (from livna).

Then I tried to install my new hp D4160 printer. Which btw was the prime
reason I bothered to replace an old mdk installation with the current
core release. My older linux(s) didn't have the D4100 series cups driver.
I don't want to only be able to print from my laptop or windows...

Anyway I haven't set up my normal user accounts yet, That happens as
soon as I get the printer working. So I did startx as root. then found
the printer menu choice, I think it was:
kmenu->settings?->printer
the print manager opened and promptly gave me the following error message(s):

Error Unable to retrieve the printer list.

connection to cups server failed

check that CUPS is installed and running

IPP request failed for unknown reason

During the boot (vga=normal) I saw the cups server being started. It
got an [OK]... So I tried to add printer class anyway. When I selected
local printer it saw the usb port connected device, which like the
kubuntu and sayon linuxss on my laptop was reported as a D4100.
But when I finished the install dialog it said it couldn't install.

so I did a yum install cups which offered an update. But the results
were the same...

Anybody got a clue what went wrong???
