image distortion between fc6 and mac tiger

I now have a comment on fedoraforum.org that Gentoo shows the same 
distortion effect.

Distorted on Gentoo and Mac, clean on FC6 at both 16 and 24 bits.

I'll just start over from scratch...it's sounding increasingly like 
something I did wrong when I converted the SVG from Wikipedia to JPEG, 
or setup the images in OpenOffice Impress.
