mc on Gnome

You can use esc-# inplace of F#, or you can turn off the disable the
help shortcut key in Gnome terminal. If you are running beryl, you
will also have to change the F8 shortcut key.

You can also re-define all the function keys that mc uses. It has a
nice learn mode to make defining a new set of keys easy.
