I suggest that this is the wrong direction. I have a SanDisk e250 that
is mounted by HAL without difficulty. I assume that HAL is running; if
not, perhaps that is the problem. (I'm also running Gnome, but I
suspect that that's irrelevant.)
Mount shows this:
/dev/sdb1 on /media/Sansa e250 type vfat
(rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,shortname=winnt,uid=501)
