Why cant I make my laptop ethernet cards recognise 10Mbs?

I forgot about that one. You run into it when someone plugged a
standard phone cord into the Ethernet jack... You can do it, but it
messes up the outer connections. But I think the OP said he tried
both the built-in NIC, and PCMCIA NIC.
