I couldn't have said it better, Dave. I've been railing on that topic
for years. If there isn't any users, then the entire fuss is for
tool-makers to make tools to be used by other tool-makers. 

A blacksmith that makes shovels isn't going to be in business long if
his market is geared to other shovel-makers. Someone needs to be on the
other end of the shovel ...using it. But, both sides can mutually
respect and take pride in the craftsmanship of the shovel and the uses
it is put to. 

The diff is when the blacksmith uses a measure of empathy in his
product, determining the correct length of the handle as a fulcrum, the
width of the blade for the perfect average load to be balanced by the
handle, the taper and smoothness of the handle, etc., then he creates a
tool to be used, not something for display to other blacksmiths. If the
blacksmith creates the "right thing" to be used, he will also stands a
better chance to become more successful. My two cents, Ric
