Keys that generate ACPI events

The <FN>brightness keys work out of the box on all the laptops I have 
built.  I am no help there.

As for using other keys, in GNOME, you can map keys with:

System/Preferences/Personal/Keyboard Shortcuts

Fedora 8 recognized my laptop volume controls without having to do this. :)
