dig out that AT&T Journal in which the design/implementation is
describe,  IIRC dot ('.') files are not displayed by, among others, ls
to save time.  The console of the first UNIX  systems were hard copy
TTYs at, what, 50 CPS.  That sort of economy extends to today for me.  

If I need to see a application's  configuration files I know how to
access  them.  BFD!!!!

Oh BTW, I have quit using vipw and friends in favor of plain vi, vim or
emacs.   OK I started administration of *NIX systems before vipr was
developed or I heard about it.

Oh and I started with *NIXes with 4.1a BSD.
