Why cant I make my laptop ethernet cards recognise 10Mbs?

Some chipsets and switches don't autonegotiate well.  You may try to
force a speed (and bypass the negotiation) by use of mii-tool or ethtool
at the Linux side and whatever commands the switch grocks at that end.
