I had not made the connection, but it would appear that you are correct.
I removed the RPM and indeed, the R java applet no longer functions. Within the
R console, error messages appear regarding the lack of libstdc++.so.5, which is
one of the two files in the aforementioned RPM.
Re-installation of the RPM, which has no other dependencies, enables the R java
applet to again function.
