François, start up xmms, click on the O - top left-hand-side > Preferences > 
Audio I/O Plugins > highlight CD Audio Player and click Configure > 
Device: /dev/cdrom
Directory /media/cdrecorder

Adapt the settings to your requirement.

Check through all the Options settings - there is a configure button for 
several things.
