does simple "DISPLAY=" and "xhost +" not work anymore?

i made sure both systems had their firewalling de-activated.  (yes, i
know that's hysterically unsafe, but i was just trying to isolate the
problem.)

i'll give that a shot next time, but i'm still curious as to why this
didn't work in the first place.
