I had a similar problem with FC4 and an old server of mine. text mode would
work fine, GUI would freeze it dead after a few random minutes.

I upgraded to FC5 and the problem persisted. What I ended up doing is to
Clean-Install FC5 and the problem went away totally.

Still today I do not know what the problem was. I almost ever had to work
with that machine (mail server) so it was easier to ignore the problem
and leave it working on Level 3.

Just my experience, for whatever it may be worth to you
