Encrypt parts of drive?

That doesn't help you at all if your drive gets stolen.  Anyone with
physical access can easily circumvent permissions in many ways.  It's
not that permissions are useless, just that they don't solve the same
problems that encrypted drives/partitions/containers (attempt to)
solve.
