I use the tools directly, capturing through a DC10+ card.

Before reading this I installed both mjpegtools and mjpegtools-devel on the 
principle that it would do no harm :-)

I'm happy to report that 'glav -p S filename' works perfectly now.  Thanks for 
all the help.
