Can you quote the exact action you took, and error message you saw  ?
What is the card model exactly (not the general x) ?

Are you sure one card wasnt a 3c905(a,b,c) ?
Perhaps you were connecting to a cisco (or similar) switch that takes 
way to long to autonegotiate, leaving the card/switch port in 10/half mode ?

And if you swap back ?
What about the dos configure tool, maybe the card has different settings  ?
