(fedora) Certain screensavers lock my machine up

You my friend are a prime candidate for bad memory.
Put your #1 install disk in cdrom, and at the Boot: Linux memtest   and 
if any red info pops up at bottom of screen , you got bad memory or 
dirty memory slots.
