SOLVED. The problem appears to have been the presence of sendmail, which I didn't delete before installing postfix; "# rpm -e sendmail" fixed that. The tip-off was the presence of sporadic lines in var/log/maillog from sendmail, which I had hitherto ignored. -- Colin Brace Amsterdam
