Gnome-session initialization

To facilitate playing with the system, I boot to a command line session
and 
start an X session with only an xterm. Starting gnome gives me a bunch
of messages with regard to themes and xfce.  I let FC6 change the theme
from bluecurve on install but have not done anything with xfce(didn't
install it). What is the system trying to find?
