A NIC is a Network Interface Card.  The place where you plug the ethernet cable
into the computer.

You can have several in one computer if you wish to.  Most common motherboards
have one built-in these days, and you just buy additional cards if you
require more.

The simplest way to share an Internet connection is to buy a router.  Dlink
routers cost around $50, and sometimes less on sale.  If you aren't doing
anything fancy (i.e. no static IP addresses, no inbound connections, your
ISP provides a simple DHCP server for customer use, etc) you may not have to do
any setup at all. Just plug the router into your modem and plug the computers
into the router.
