More Yum Problems with F7 [SOLVED]

Thanks, Chris for your help.  You were heading in the right direction.
 The final solution came via the yum list:

I replied:

On the bad laptop the rpm -V command showed prelinking changes with rpm libs.

I ran ldd on one of the libs and discovered some old gcc and pthreads
libraries in /usr/local/lib.  I removed the old /usr/local/lib gcc and
pthreads libraries and now everything works fine.

So my laptop is working now and my confidence in yum is restored.
