video card driver necessary?

If you've got video at a decent resolution then you have
a driver specific to your hardware already.  If you use
nVidia or ATI graphics then the manufacturer's drivers
are usually needed for 3D acceleration (including
desktop effects).  Do you have an ATI card?  What type?
