Thanks Antonio, that's cleared up the bit about "sr0". I poked about a bit 
more, and tried commenting out the "cd" line in /etc/auto.misc, rebooted, but 
the problem was still there.

Often fixes are very simple things, and I decided to look at KDE's KsCD. By 
default it puts an icon in the taskbar. Simply right clicking on the icon, 
and quitting KsCD has stopped the messages, as you can see below.

As you can see above, the messages stop after the entry at 17:19:11 after 
removing the taskbar icon for KsCD. I then open KsCD to change the default 
preferences, so that an icon for KsCD is not put on the taskbar, and the 
messages start again at 17:27:46. After editing the preferences I close KsCD, 
and the messages stop at 17:29:53.

I'm posting this from FC2, and KsCD has an icon in the taskbar there, but no 
odd messages. I will also fire up FC5, and FC6 to see if there any odd 
messages which appear to be associated KsCD's icon being in the taskbar.

It does seem odd though, that on Fedora 7's KDE, KsCD's icon in the taskbar is 
posting messages every second, complaining that there is no CDROM in the 
drive.

I was playing a DVD movie and on occasions xine would freeze because the dvd was scratched a bit and I had to reload it and skip those parts of the movie in order to complete it.

Some have mentioned doing
# ln -s /dev/sr0 /dev/scd0

on some forums that doing this takes care of the problem, but I have not done it yet.  Maybe I will try later.  Also there was a problem with gnome-baker on Fedora 7 because it kept refering to /dev/sr0
