Petrified to upgrade

Don't do an upgrade. I've upgraded FC5 and FC6 to FC7 and all were not
good experiences. Save your /home partition, and erase & reformat
the other partitions and install completely fresh. If you want to,
you can copy your /etc partition somewhere safe so you can use that
backup to see how you had things up and re-construct what you had.
Also, after you install fresh, consider moving .kde and .gnome and
.gconf (and other dot files) directories out of your user account and
let the system set up new hierarchies. The desktop will look much
different if you start with current defaults. If it finds your old
config files, it will show you its interpretation of that old bunch of
settings.
