I have one of them on at least one of my PCs (the snippet below is from
the box I'm currently using). Mine was set up automatically by the
system, I didn't have to do anything special to make it work.

[root at bigblack ~]# lspci |grep 900
00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS900 PCI Fast Ethernet (rev 90)

I'm wondering whether the problem is external (the ethernet works, but
you're not having any luck with what's connected to it). You could try
manually configuring it with a fixed IP. And seeing if you, at least,
get the interface coming up, even if it doesn't talk to the outside
world. What sort of cabling is in use? Straight through or crossed
over? Can you try something else?

Another problem might be the BIOS. I've had PCs where I've had to play
with plug-and-play options, and other kernel parameters, to get all the
hardware in working order. If you haven't installed the kernel
documentation, you might want to, or google for: kernel-parameters.txt

Using FC 4, 5, 6 & 7, plus CentOS 5. Today, it's FC7.
