After reading your reply, it occurred to me to check the output
from ./configure and see what it had to tell me.

It was immediately obvious that what I was missing is gtkspell-devel.

I proceeded to install that, re-compiled Sylpheed, and that is all that it
took.  The automatic spelling-checker is back.
