I believe [homes] is a special share, and does not require a path=
section. At least is has not on every version I have run over the
last 10+ years. Here is my [home] that works fine on FC-6.

[homes]
   comment = Home Directories
   browseable = no
   writable = yes

So I do not think that is the problem...
