Rsync will want filesystem access. Try (untested):

  mkdir /mnt/uni
  mount -t cifs -o user=myusername //server.uni.edu/myuser\$ /mnt/uni

and then:

  rsync ... localdir/. /mnt/uni/foo/bah/.

adjust as you find necessary.
