I think I see that message if I try to adjust the network settings as a 
normal user rather than root.

You might like to try: service network stop  and then service network 
start in a terminal, with the hope that some further messages are shown 
{or perhaps in /var/log/messages}

It may be that the module for netcard is not loading. In fact:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=243586
might be the same issue.
