Could it be that folks are attempting to burn the DVD an the max advertised
write speed?  I've always found that to be somewhat risky depending on the
quality of the media...with even the best/well know media producing mixed
results.  I tend to burn my DVD's at 4X at most.

The normal caveats apply.
