Mounting USB storage devices

I don't even get a 'mount pop-up' in kde when I plug-in an usb-hd. Manually mounting (mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/test) works. 
When I try gnome-mount -d /dev/sdb1 running as root I get a pop-up 'You are not privileged to mount ..'. Yeah, right.
FC6 works...
