-y just answers "yes" to if you want to apply the updates.

I have encountered the problem you are seeing.  Something is not timing 
out correctly.  It sounds like you are connecting to the site, but the 
connection is getting hung up before it delivers content.

Are you going through a firewall?  Pix firewalls sometimes do this, 
especially when not configured correctly.
