        Skype and other things

There are those on this list who claim that nothing but a Fedora/Red
Hat rpm has ever touched their computer! They want nothing of other
peoples hard work. I got some grumbles when I said Skype MUST work on
FC6 or I will not upgrade. I was serious because today I talked for 30
minutes with my good friend Alan in Melbourne,AU. All this is free of
cost because Linux and Skype are free and the Internet is a fixed cost
even if you do not use it.

Skype you get from their web page using Google and get the Linux one
called a Beta copy for FC6 and F7. I got it down and found a lot of that
version was looking for FC5 rpm files. I just did a #rpm -i
skype-1.4.0.74.rpm and it showed 5 dependents not met. So I used yum and
got all 5 dependents loaded and then skype loaded and showed up in
Applications->Internet.

If you use Windows you can attach a web-cam to Skype and see
yourself and the person your talking to. Alas the Linux version doesn't
have that feature. But at least there IS one you can use. I will be glad
to have you call me. My Skype is called k5diusa.

I have vlc yummed and working. It is found in Applications->Sound
and Video and it works just GREAT on FC6. Alas F7 is not able to yum it.
I am just experimenting with vlc but it does a lot more than just show
full screen movies. It will show files and all manner of still picture
formats. It does much more but I have yet to learn how to use the other
features.

You guys who can yum vlc and we can talk on this forum about what it
can really do. It is amazing. With nothing on TV any more it becomes
necessary to buy movies to end a pleasant day.

So don't sell the non-fedora software short. It has real
capabilities and works just fine on Fedora Linux.
