No, there really isn't more to it than just that.  Unless you can
provide an nvidia-bug-report.log which captures this problem, there
really isn't any more to discuss here, as I'm quite confident in my
understanding of how the driver validates modes, and you haven't
provided much other than scant details about a problem.
