I don't know what happens under gnome (which is what you are using given your 
screen shot). But under kde hitting print-screen fires up 'ksnaphot' - A 
great little screnshot app.

Unlike the name suggests, the scheme is not actually 'printed' in the 
ink-on-paper sense, but electronically. ksnapshot gives you the option to 
save the snapshot whereever you want, as (almost) whatever file type you want 
(png, jpg, gif etc.)

It also gives you the option to retake the snapshot under a different mode. 
E.g.a single X window or a given region (which you can choose by dragging the 
mouse ofver a region you want). Very very useful.
