Slight correction:  the "Resource Fork" was (and is) an alternate data
stream, a term familiar from NTFS.  Apple did keep Finder Info (including
the file's attributes such as visibility and application information such
as type and creator codes) and some other metadata in the file's catalog
entry.  It was stored separately on other more limited filesystems, often
in an AppleDouble file, or it could be stored with the data in an
AppleSingle file.
