First do not use rpm -U to install the new kernel. That will remove
all older kernels.

To fix your current problem try the following:

1. Download or mount the CD/DVD containing the 2981 kernel.
2. Use rpm -ivh /path-to-kernel/kernel-*.rpm
3. Do an rpm -e kernel-xxx.2987.
4. Edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and remove stanza for 2982. (If 2987
stanza exists remove it.)
5. Reboot.

At this point you should be able re-install the 2987 kernel.
