Use tar to append?

First one needs tar cf...
Apparently tar Af does not work unless the tar file already
exists.

Yes, indeed.

Well, I tried it, and it's taking longer and l.o.n.g.e.r and
l..o..n..g..e..r for each new diretory. It just timed /usr/src
and it took over 2 minutes to back up 48 kilobytes. It's copying
and copying or seeking and seeking or sth.
